MCT
Situated in eastern bank of the Pearl River Estuary and Western Shenzhen, Mawan SmartPort (MCT) is the only port spanning across five areas and zones in China including the GBA, the Pilot Demonstration Area of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the Qianhai & Shekou Area of (Guangdong) Pilot Free Trade Zone and the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone.
MCT, commenced in December 1987, is built on a land created by mountain removal and reclamations from sea. On July 15, 1990, the day before MCT was put into operation, "Mawan Port", the name of the terminal, was personally inscribed by Mr. Xi Zhongxun, then Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.
2017, China Merchants Port set a goal to turn MCT from a traditional bulk cargo terminal into China's first world-leading smart port. The project was commenced in September the year, and completed and officially put into operation on June 28, 2021.
As a combination of nine smart elements, including BTOS, CM ePort, AI, 5G application, BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, automation, smart port, blockchain and low-carbon development, MCT is is characterized by independent control, commercial feasibility, advanced technology, integrated innovation, low carbon and reproducibility. As the first 5G-based and low-carbon smart port in the GBA, MCT has delivered remarkable results including creation of the world's first full-range, around-the-clock, all-working-conditions and multi-factor upgrading solution for traditional container terminals, independent development of the CTOS system, an intelligent and synergistic control system for container terminals, and a solution to the industry-wide problem of all-weather and synergistical control of both manually and intelligently driven container trucks.
Integrated Operation
A New-generation Economically Efficient & Intelligent Container Terminal
After 3 years of construction, the four berths for bulk cargo vessels in MCT were combined into two for 200,000 DWT container vessels only. With a new layout, MCT, covering a total area of 983,600 square meters with 5 berths spreading along a 1,930-meter coastline, is able to handle 3 million TEUs and accommodate world's largest container vessels, becoming a new-generation economically efficient and intelligent container terminal.
